Used as a catalyst in automotive catalytic converters to reduce harmful emissions by converting nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and unburned hydrocarbons into less toxic substances like nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Widely applied in industrial catalysis for hydrogenation, hydroformylation, and carbonylation reactions due to its high efficiency and selectivity. Employed in the production of optical fibers and flat-panel displays as a crucible material for growing high-purity crystals, thanks to its excellent resistance to corrosion and high-temperature stability. Used in electrical contacts and spark plug electrodes where durability and resistance to oxidation are critical. Also found in jewelry as a thin plating to provide a highly reflective, tarnish-resistant finish on white gold and platinum items.
