description Product Description
Raney®-Nickel is widely used as a highly active catalyst in hydrogenation reactions. It is particularly effective in converting unsaturated organic compounds into saturated ones, such as turning alkenes into alkanes, nitriles into amines, and aldehydes or ketones into alcohols. Its high surface area and porous structure allow for rapid uptake of hydrogen, making it ideal for industrial-scale processes.
One of its key applications is in the production of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals, where selective hydrogenation is required under mild conditions. It is also employed in the synthesis of fatty amines from nitriles, which are important in surfactants and agrochemicals.
In addition, Raney®-Nickel is used in desulfurization processes, such as removing sulfur from organic compounds in petroleum refining. It plays a role in the cleanup of feedstocks by converting thiophenes and other sulfur-containing molecules into hydrocarbons and hydrogen sulfide, which can be more easily removed.
Due to its pyrophoric nature when dry, it is typically handled and stored under water or alcohol to prevent spontaneous ignition. Despite handling challenges, its catalytic efficiency and reusability in many processes make it a valuable tool in both laboratory and industrial settings.
