Product Description: Tetrahydrofuran is widely used as a polar aprotic solvent in laboratory and industrial settings. It is particularly effective in reactions involving organometallic compounds, such as Grignard reagents and lithium aluminum hydride, due to its ability to dissolve these reagents and stabilize reactive intermediates. One of its major industrial applications is as a solvent in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other polymers. It plays a key role in the synthesis of elastomers like spandex fibers, where it facilitates the polymerization of tetramethylene glycol with diisocyanates. Tetrahydrofuran is also used in 3D printing and additive manufacturing as a solvent for cleaning and smoothing printed parts, especially those made from ABS plastic. It can slightly dissolve the surface, allowing layers to fuse and creating a smoother finish. In chemical synthesis, it serves as a reaction medium for hydroboration, hydrogenation, and various coupling reactions. Its miscibility with water and organic solvents makes it versatile for extraction and purification processes. Due to its low viscosity and high volatility, it is employed in chromatography and as a mobile phase component in some analytical techniques. However, its tendency to form peroxides upon exposure to air requires careful handling and storage.
