Erythromycin is widely used as an antibiotic to treat various bacterial infections. It is also prescribed for sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia, and for gastrointestinal infections caused by Campylobacter. In addition, erythromycin is used in patients allergic to penicillin as an alternative treatment. It is sometimes applied topically for skin conditions or used in eye ointments to prevent infections in newborns. Erythromycin also plays a role in treating conditions like Legionnaires' disease and diphtheria. Its macrolide structure allows it to inhibit bacterial protein synthesis, making it a versatile option in combating bacterial growth.
