Pantethine
Pantethine is a vitamin B5-family cosmetic active supplied as a 40% active concentrate for skin-conditioning, barrier-care, sensitive-skin, scalp-care, and hair-conditioning formulas.
Pantethine is the disulfide dimer form of pantetheine and is structurally related to pantothenic-acid, panthenol, and coenzyme-A biology. In finished cosmetics it is best positioned as an advanced B5-family comfort-care active: useful where the formula concept focuses on moisturized skin feel, barrier support, reduced look of stress, and improved skin/scalp conditioning.
This grade is a clear to light-yellow viscous liquid with 40.0% active content. It is water-compatible, suited to low-temperature addition, and should be protected from heat, light, and prolonged air exposure during processing and storage.
Product Description: Pantethine can be used in leave-on facial serums, moisturizing gels, barrier-care creams, toners, masks, scalp serums, shampoos, conditioners, and hair treatments. Direct cosmetic evidence for Pantethine itself should be framed carefully, while B5-family formulation practice supports its use in products designed for dry, rough, sensitive-feeling, or environmentally stressed skin and scalp. For stronger marketing claims, confirm performance with finished-product testing.
| Formulation Target | Pantethine Role | Formulation Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Barrier-care serum/cream | B5-family skin-conditioning and comfort active | Add during cool-down; combine with humectants, ceramides, niacinamide, or panthenol when compatible. |
| Sensitive-skin products | Helps support a moisturized, comfortable skin feel | Keep fragrance and solvent load low; verify irritation profile in the finished formula. |
| Scalp and hair-care systems | Conditioning support for scalp and hair feel | Add after surfactant hydration or during cool-down to minimize heat exposure and foaming. |
Usage: Suitable for serums, creams, lotions, clear gels, toners, masks, scalp serums, shampoos, conditioners, and hair-treatment products where a water-compatible B5-family active is desired.
Mixing method:
- Add to the water phase or post-emulsification cool-down phase, preferably below 40°C.
- Maintain final formula pH around 3–7; pH 4–6 is a practical target for most leave-on skin-care systems.
- Pre-dilute with a small amount of deionized water or glycol if needed for easier weighing and uniform addition.
- Avoid prolonged heat, strong oxidizing/reducing systems, high fragrance load, and unnecessary aeration. Use light-protective, well-sealed packaging for formulas with high active positioning.
Usage rate: Use 0.5–5% of this 40% concentrate (delivers ~0.2–2.0% active). Typical: 2% concentrate delivers ~0.8% active Pantethine.
Product characteristics: Colorless to light-yellow viscous liquid with characteristic odor.
Solubility: Water-compatible; soluble in water and glycols. Add with moderate mixing until uniform.
