Used primarily to treat infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites. Commonly prescribed for bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and amoebiasis. Offers advantage of single-dose treatment in some cases, improving patient compliance. Also used in combination therapies for gastrointestinal infections. Its long half-life allows less frequent dosing compared to similar antimicrobials.
