Used in the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by resistant Gram-positive pathogens. It is a prodrug that converts to its active form, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Shows potent activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). Investigated for use in skin and soft tissue infections as well as respiratory tract infections where multidrug resistance is a concern. Its phosphate ester form enhances oral bioavailability, making it suitable for outpatient therapy.
