Deleobuvir is an experimental antiviral agent developed primarily for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. It functions as a non-nucleoside inhibitor of the HCV RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, specifically targeting the NS5B enzyme, which is essential for viral replication. By binding to an allosteric site on NS5B, Deleobuvir disrupts the replication process, thereby reducing viral load in infected individuals. It was investigated as part of combination therapy regimens with other antiviral agents, such as ribavirin and pegylated interferon-alpha, showing enhanced efficacy in clinical trials. Its use aimed to improve sustained virologic response rates, particularly in patients with HCV genotype 1 infection. Although development was discontinued due to challenges with efficacy and side effects in later-stage trials, Deleobuvir contributed valuable insights into polymerase inhibitor design for future HCV treatments.
