S-Carbomer™ (Sodium Carbomer)
Pre-neutralized Sodium Carbomer thickener for clear aqueous and hydroalcoholic gels; disperses quickly without a separate neutralization step.
S-Carbomer™ (Sodium Carbomer) is a pre-neutralized carbomer polymer used as a thickening, suspending, and stabilizing agent for cosmetic systems that need fast viscosity build with good clarity.
Because the polymer is already in its sodium form, it avoids the separate neutralization step normally required for acid carbomers. This simplifies process flow, reduces dusting and lumping risk during charging, and helps keep batch pH more consistent through production.
In water it gives clear, high-viscosity dispersions even at low use levels. Typical Brookfield values at 20 rpm and 25°C are 13,000-25,000 mPas at 0.2% and 35,000-55,000 mPas at 0.5%. These values are typical guidance rather than QC specifications.
Product Description: Sodium Carbomer is designed for formulators who want carbomer-type rheology without a dedicated neutralization step. It can be used to build clear gels, increase viscosity, improve suspension, and stabilize emulsified or hydroalcoholic systems. The powder thickens rapidly when it is added slowly into water or water/alcohol blends up to 70:30, and it can also be incorporated into either the water phase or oil phase before emulsification, or sprinkled into a finished emulsion with continued stirring until uniform. Small pH reductions can be made with acids such as citric acid, lactic acid, phosphoric acid, or HCl, but excessive acid load can reduce viscosity because salt formation weakens the gel structure. Finished formulas still require an appropriate preservative system, and prolonged UV exposure can reduce gel viscosity. It is best suited to formulations in the pH 4.5-11.0 range.
| Dispersion | Brookfield viscosity | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2% in water | 13,000-25,000 mPas | Spindle 6, 20 rpm, 25°C |
| 0.5% in water | 35,000-55,000 mPas | Spindle 7, 20 rpm, 25°C |
Usage: Clear gels, hydroalcoholic gels, serum-gels, lotion-gels, emulsions, and suspending systems where fast viscosity development and good clarity are required.
Mixing method:
- Add the powder slowly with good bulk agitation, preferably with anchor-type or similarly effective low-to-medium shear mixing, to avoid lumping.
- For aqueous or hydroalcoholic systems, sprinkle directly into water or water/alcohol blends up to 70:30 and continue mixing until the gel is fully uniform.
- For emulsions, disperse before emulsification in the selected phase or post-add by sprinkling into the emulsion and stirring until homogeneous; always re-check viscosity after pH adjustment, strong acid addition, or high electrolyte loading.
Usage rate: 0.2-2.0%; around 0.2-0.5% is often sufficient for clear gel building, while higher levels can be used when more yield value or suspension is needed.
Product characteristics: Hygroscopic white powder; bulk density about 0.3-0.45 g/cm3. A 0.5% water dispersion typically shows pH 6.0-7.5.
Solubility: Dispersible in water and water/alcohol blends up to 70:30. It swells to form clear viscous gels rather than functioning as an oil-soluble thickener.
Storage: Keep tightly closed in a dry place, protected from moisture and direct light.
Toxicology data reported for the acid form indicate oral LD50 > 2000 mg/kg and non-irritant / non-sensitizing results in standard acute skin, eye, and sensitization tests.
