Used to treat certain types of irregular heart rhythms, particularly atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. It helps maintain normal heart rhythm and reduces the risk of hospitalization in patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation who are in sinus rhythm or will be cardioverted. Dronedarone is not intended for patients with permanent atrial fibrillation and is generally avoided in those with severe heart failure due to increased risk of adverse outcomes. It works by affecting the electrical activity of the heart, slowing nerve impulses and reducing heart rate. Often prescribed to lower the need for repeat hospital visits related to heart rhythm disturbances.
