Used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS, preventing the progression of CMV eye infections and preserving vision. Also prescribed for prevention of CMV disease in high-risk transplant recipients, particularly those receiving organ or bone marrow transplants. It is an oral prodrug of ganciclovir, allowing for better absorption and convenient long-term management of CMV infections.
