Ulipristal is primarily used as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure. It works by delaying or inhibiting ovulation through selective modulation of progesterone receptors in the body. It is effective when taken within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex, with higher efficacy the sooner it is taken. Ulipristal is also used in the treatment of uterine fibroids due to its ability to modulate hormonal activity, reducing fibroid size and associated symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding. Its selective action on progesterone receptors makes it useful in managing hormone-sensitive conditions without completely blocking hormonal function.
