Pure-Xanthoxylin™ (Mite-Repellent) is a natural-origin mite-repellent active for treated articles (sundries), based on xanthoxylin (≥95%) derived from the pericarp (peel) of Sichuan pepper (Zanthoxylum bungeanum).
It is designed to deliver strong entry-inhibition repellency at low surface add-on, with performance data reported as 91.4% mite repellence at 0.1 g/m² after 24 hours using the JIS L 1920 textile method (house dust mite entry inhibition).
For durability, the active is characterized by low volatility (vapor pressure 0.0000375 mmHg at room temperature) and heat stability (repellency maintained after 200°C × 120 min), supporting processing concepts that include heat or high-temperature drying/curing.
Product Description: Xanthoxylin is a high-purity natural aromatic compound. The supplied grade is specified as ≥95% xanthoxylin (Sichuan pepper pericarp derived) and is positioned for “mite repellent” claims on treated surfaces (entry inhibition/repellency), not for “kills mites” claims unless separate lethality (miticidal) data exists.
- Tested mite repellency endpoint: entry inhibition (repellence rate), not mortality.
- Target design concept across formats: deliver ~0.1 g/m² (100 mg/m²) of active on the treated surface as a validated starting point.
- Durable performance drivers: low volatility (helps retention) and high heat stability (supports heat processing concepts).
- Applicable treated-article formats: textiles/nonwovens, films/sheets, dried coatings/finishes (e.g., wood floor wax/coatings), and professional spray concepts (carrier system dependent).
| Test / System | Conditions | Result |
|---|---|---|
| House dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae), JIS L 1920 entry inhibition | 0.1 g/m² on treated filter paper; 24 h | Repellence rate 91.4% |
| Ant repellence (cross-insect reference) | 0.1 g/m²; 30 test ants (facility: Viable Co., Ltd.) | Repellence rate 99.9% |
Usage: Mite-repellent active for treated articles (sundries), suitable for:
- Textiles: fabrics/nonwovens, bedding covers, liners (design by basis weight and target surface add-on).
- Films/sheets: polymer films, liners, cover sheets (design by film basis weight).
- Coatings/finishes/wax: dried film add-on systems such as wood floor wax/coatings (design by dry add-on).
- Sprays (industrial/professional concepts): apply to achieve a defined surface loading (carrier system and exposure controls required).
Mixing method:
- Because the active is insoluble in water, pre-dissolve in ethanol or another compatible organic solvent system before application, or incorporate into a solvent-compatible binder/coating system.
- For water-based systems, develop an engineered dispersion or a compatible co-solvent/binder approach; do not add directly into water and expect dissolution.
- If processing involves heat, the reported heat stability (200°C × 120 min) supports feasibility, but final retention/odor/durability should be confirmed in the customer’s process.
- Handle as a fine powder with appropriate dust control and industrial hygiene practices.
Usage rate: ~0.05–2.0% (depending on substrate and dry add-on), targeting ~0.1 g/m² (100 mg/m²) active on the treated surface as a validated starting point.
Textiles (w/w on fabric) conversion:
- % (w/w on fabric) = (0.1 g/m² ÷ fabric weight (g/m²)) × 100
| Typical textile weight (g/m²) | Equivalent active level on fabric (% w/w) |
|---|---|
| 100 | 0.10% |
| 120 | 0.083% |
| 150 | 0.067% |
| 200 | 0.050% |
Films/sheets (w/w in film) examples:
- 50 g/m² film → 0.20% w/w active
- 100 g/m² film → 0.10% w/w active
Coatings/finishes/wax (in dried coating solids) conversion:
- % (in coating solids) = (0.1 g/m² ÷ dry coating add-on (g/m²)) × 100
| Dry coating add-on (g/m²) | Active needed in coating solids (wt%) |
|---|---|
| 5 | 2.0% |
| 10 | 1.0% |
| 20 | 0.5% |
Product characteristics: White to light yellow crystalline powder; slight characteristic odor.
Solubility: Insoluble in water; soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol. Select a carrier/binder compatible with the target substrate and processing method.
Storage: Store tightly closed in a dry place, protected from heat and direct light. Keep away from moisture; seal promptly after use.
