description Product Description
Alirocumab is a monoclonal antibody used primarily in the management of high cholesterol, particularly in patients who do not respond adequately to statins or other lipid-lowering therapies. It works by inhibiting PCSK9, a protein that promotes the degradation of LDL receptors in the liver. By blocking PCSK9, alirocumab increases the number of LDL receptors available to remove LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream, leading to a significant reduction in LDL-C levels.
It is indicated for use in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, or established cardiovascular disease where additional lowering of LDL cholesterol is needed. Alirocumab is administered via subcutaneous injection and is often used in combination with diet and other lipid-lowering treatments.
Clinical studies have shown that alirocumab not only reduces LDL cholesterol by up to 60% but also lowers the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients. Its role in long-term cardiovascular risk reduction makes it a valuable option in secondary prevention strategies.
