Alfuzosin is an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) used in the manufacture of medications for treating symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), where the prostate gland enlarges. It functions as an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker, relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder neck to improve urine flow. This relieves BPH symptoms like difficulty initiating urination, weak stream, frequent or urgent urination (especially at night), and reduces the risk of acute urinary retention. Alfuzosin-based drugs are typically formulated as once-daily extended-release oral tablets. Note that it manages symptoms but does not shrink the prostate. For optimal absorption, formulations are often taken after the same meal daily.
