Used primarily to treat serious bacterial infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria, especially methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It is often reserved for patients who cannot tolerate other antibiotics or when the infecting organism is known to be resistant to first-line drugs. Commonly administered intravenously for systemic infections, it can also be given orally to treat Clostridioides difficile infection of the gastrointestinal tract. Due to its potency and risk of resistance, it is typically used only when other antibiotics are ineffective.
