Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone is a high-refractive-index phenyl-substituted silicone fluid used as a skin conditioner, hair conditioner and gloss-enhancing emollient in skin care, hair care, color cosmetics and sunscreens.
This non-volatile silicone oil forms a thin, flexible hydrophobic film that helps reduce transepidermal water loss while delivering a very silky, dry slip. Its high phenyl group density (refractive index around 1.495–1.498) boosts specular reflection and improves depth, clarity and shine in make-up, hair and UV formulations.
The ingredient is a colorless, transparent liquid with low odor and good thermal stability. It is compatible with many silicones, esters and oils, and can help reduce tack from film-formers, improve spreadability, and support water resistance in long-wear and sun care products.
Product Description: Phenyl-rich silicone emollient that provides a smooth, cushioned skin feel, improves combability and softness on hair, and enhances optical gloss on the surface. The high refractive index makes it especially useful to intensify shine on hair, add dimension to color cosmetics, and improve clarity in transparent or translucent systems.
Usage: Suitable for facial and body creams/lotions, serums, primers, foundations and cushions, lip and eye products, clear UV sticks, sunscreens, hair conditioners, leave-on treatments and styling products where extra shine and a non-greasy slip are desired.
Mixing method:
- Emulsions: add to the oil or silicone phase and homogenize; can usually tolerate typical oil-phase heating, but confirm stability with your system.
- Anhydrous oils/sticks: blend with other silicones and oils until uniform, then combine with waxes/structuring agents; avoid excessive air entrapment.
- Finish and adjustment: for many formulas it can also be added during cool-down (<40°C) to fine-tune slip and shine.
Usage rate: 0.1–10% in most skin and hair care; up to ~20–30% in high-gloss color cosmetics or clear UV sticks where strong shine and film formation are required.
Product characteristics: Colorless to slightly yellow, transparent liquid; low odor; non-volatile, hydrophobic phenyl silicone fluid with low to medium viscosity.
Solubility: Insoluble in water. Miscible with many silicones (dimethicones, cyclomethicones, other phenyl silicones) and compatible with many cosmetic oils/esters and UV filters; helps wet and disperse pigments and filters in the oil/silicone phase.
