Watermelon Seed Oil (Refined)
Watermelon Seed Oil (Refined)™ is a 100% refined fixed vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of Citrullus lanatus. It is used as a lightweight emollient, carrier oil, and lipid-phase sensory modifier for skin care, body care, hair care, lip care, cleansing oils, balms, and anhydrous oil serums.
The oil is valued mainly for its triglyceride fatty-acid profile, expected to be rich in unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, with oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids. In finished formulas, this profile supports a smooth, light, non-heavy after-feel while helping soften dry-feeling skin and improve slip during application.
Evidence for this ingredient should be framed conservatively: Watermelon Seed Oil is best supported by fixed-oil formulation science, emollient performance, and composition-based barrier comfort, rather than by strong direct human clinical studies on refined watermelon seed oil itself.
Product Description: Watermelon Seed Oil (Refined) is suitable when a formula needs natural-origin oil-phase emolliency without a heavy, waxy, or overly occlusive feel. It can reduce drag from waxes, butters, powders, and high-solid systems, improve glide in creams and lotions, and serve as a carrier for oil-soluble cosmetic ingredients such as tocopherol, lipid-soluble botanical extracts, fragrance components, colorants, and some oil-soluble actives where compatibility has been confirmed.
In skin-care products, it contributes lightweight conditioning and helps the skin surface feel smoother and more comfortable. In hair-care products, it can improve softness, shine, and dry combing feel, especially in hair oils, scalp oils, conditioners, masks, and leave-on serums. In cleansing oils and cleansing balms, it can form part of the oil base that mobilizes sebum, sunscreen residues, makeup, and other oil-soluble soils when paired with suitable oil-phase emulsifiers.
| Formula Type | Technical Role | Formulation Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Creams / Lotions | Light emollient, glide improvement | Add to oil phase; adjust emulsifier load when oil phase is high. |
| Facial Oils / Body Oils | Primary or secondary carrier oil | Blend with esters or more stable oils to tune absorption and oxidation resistance. |
| Balms / Sticks | Softening oil, pay-off modifier | Higher levels can soften wax systems; test heat stability and sweating. |
| Cleansing Oils / Balms | Oil base for sebum and makeup removal | Use with oil-soluble emulsifiers; verify rinse feel and eye-area tolerance. |
| Hair Oils / Conditioners | Softness, shine, dry-feel reduction | Fine hair usually needs lower levels; check build-up and dry combing. |
Usage: Suitable for creams, lotions, facial oils, oil serums, body oils, massage oils, cleansing oils, cleansing balms, oil gels, lip balms, salves, sticks, hair oils, scalp oils, conditioners, hair masks, and color cosmetics requiring emolliency or pigment wetting support.
Mixing method:
- Add to the oil phase of emulsions or blend directly into anhydrous oil systems.
- Prefer room-temperature to mild-warm blending for anhydrous products; in emulsions, short exposure to normal oil-phase processing temperatures is acceptable, but avoid prolonged heating above 75°C.
- For formulas with high levels of unsaturated oils, add an antioxidant such as tocopherol or mixed tocopherols and minimize air, light, and metal contamination.
- Do not add directly to water-only gels or aqueous toners unless a suitable emulsifier, solubilizer, or pre-emulsified system is used.
Usage rate: 1–100%
Typical starting levels: 1–10% in creams and lotions, 5–100% in facial/body oils, 5–40% in balms and sticks, 10–80% in cleansing oils/balms, and 1–10% in conditioners or hair masks. Adjust by sensory target, oil-phase capacity, and finished-product stability.
Product characteristics: Refined liquid vegetable oil, pale yellow to yellow, mild characteristic odor.
Solubility: Insoluble in water. Miscible with vegetable oils, esters, hydrocarbons, many lipophilic emollients, and suitable oil-soluble antioxidants. Dispersible in emulsions only with an appropriate emulsifier system.
Store tightly closed, away from heat, air, and direct sunlight. Monitor oxidation by odor, color, and peroxide-value change during stability testing.
