Used primarily in the treatment of hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women, this compound acts on brain neurotransmitters to help restore sexual interest. It targets serotonin receptors, modulating mood and desire pathways, and is prescribed when low sexual desire causes significant distress. The treatment requires daily administration and is most effective in women with persistent low libido not caused by underlying medical, psychological, or relationship issues. Due to the risk of severe hypotension and syncope, especially when combined with alcohol or certain medications, its use is restricted under a risk evaluation and mitigation strategy (REMS). It is not intended for use in men or postmenopausal women and does not act as a hormone or immediate sexual stimulant.
