Used in treating inflammatory lung diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis by reducing tissue damage caused by excessive neutrophil elastase activity. Helps protect lung tissue from degradation by inhibiting the breakdown of elastin and other structural proteins. Investigated for use in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and severe asthma to control inflammation and prevent airway remodeling. Also explored in skin disorders involving inflammation and in ischemia-reperfusion injury to minimize organ damage.
