Used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, particularly in the preparation of sulfonamide-based pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Also employed in the development of dyes and fluorescent probes because of its electron-withdrawing nitro group and sulfonamide functionality. Its reactivity makes it useful in nucleophilic substitution reactions, especially in the formation of sulfonamides with amines.
