Used primarily in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach through irreversible inhibition of the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. Commonly administered intravenously in clinical settings when oral intake is not possible, especially in hospitalized patients with severe acid-related disorders. Also used in combination with antibiotics for eradication of Helicobacter pylori infections. Its sodium salt form enhances solubility for parenteral formulations, allowing rapid onset of action in acute conditions.
