Used primarily in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome by reducing stomach acid production. It is a proton pump inhibitor that selectively blocks the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme system in the gastric parietal cells. Effective in healing erosive esophagitis and providing relief from heartburn and acid-related symptoms. Often prescribed in combination with antibiotics for eradication of Helicobacter pylori infections. The (R)-enantiomer offers improved metabolic stability and bioavailability compared to the racemic mixture, allowing for lower dosing and reduced interpatient variability.
