Used primarily to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), this chemical relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. This helps improve urine flow and reduces difficulty in urination. It is also used to help pass kidney stones located in the lower part of the ureter by relaxing the muscles in the ureter. The effect leads to faster stone expulsion, decreased pain, and reduced need for hospitalization. Due to its selective action, it typically has fewer cardiovascular side effects compared to other similar medications.
