It functions by inhibiting the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme, which increases the levels of active incretin hormones such as GLP-1 and GIP. This enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells and suppresses glucagon release from alpha cells, leading to better glycemic control. Often prescribed as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic drugs like metformin. Its glucose-lowering effect is associated with a low risk of hypoglycemia and generally weight-neutral outcomes.
