Used in the treatment and prevention of complications from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) infections, particularly in patients at risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Neutralizes Shiga toxin in the bloodstream, preventing it from damaging endothelial cells in the kidneys and other organs. Investigated for use in severe gastrointestinal infections caused by E. coli O157:H7 and related strains. Administered intravenously during early stages of infection to reduce disease progression. Also serves as a reference reagent in diagnostic assays and research settings to detect and quantify Shiga toxins.
