It works by blocking the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor receptor (GM-CSFRα), which plays a key role in the activation and survival of immune cells like macrophages and dendritic cells. By inhibiting this pathway, the antibody helps reduce inflammation and joint damage. It has also been investigated for use in other conditions involving excessive immune activation, including certain lung inflammatory disorders and potentially severe viral infections where cytokine overproduction is a concern.
