Edoxaban is an anticoagulant used primarily to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. It is also used for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Unlike older anticoagulants, edoxaban does not require routine blood monitoring, making it more convenient for long-term use. It works by selectively inhibiting Factor Xa, a key component in the blood clotting process. Due to its predictable pharmacokinetics, it is administered once daily and has fewer food and drug interactions compared to vitamin K antagonists like warfarin. Edoxaban is particularly beneficial in patients who cannot tolerate or manage the complexities of traditional anticoagulant therapy.
