Pimecrolimus is primarily used as a topical immunosuppressant in the treatment of atopic dermatitis (eczema), especially in mild to moderate cases. It works by inhibiting T-cell activation and the release of inflammatory cytokines, reducing skin inflammation and itching without causing skin thinning, which is common with corticosteroids. It is often prescribed for short-term and intermittent long-term management in patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate other therapies. Due to its favorable safety profile on sensitive skin areas, it is commonly used on the face, neck, and intertriginous areas. Pimecrolimus is also investigated for off-label use in other inflammatory skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and certain types of dermatitis in immunocompromised patients.
