Cholesterol EZ™ (4% Cholesterol Water Soluble) is a colorless, transparent, water-compatible cholesterol concentrate for cosmetic barrier-support formulations. The product delivers cholesterol at 4% w/w by cyclodextrin complexation, allowing a normally lipophilic skin lipid to be added conveniently through the aqueous phase.

Cholesterol is one of the three major physiologic lipid classes in the stratum corneum, together with ceramides and free fatty acids. In leave-on skin-care systems, the most useful role of cholesterol is not as a stand-alone moisturizer, but as the cholesterol component in a balanced triple-lipid system that supports lamellar organization and barrier recovery.

This concentrate is intended for formulators who need controlled delivered-active dosing. Using 2–10% of the concentrate delivers approximately 0.08–0.40% cholesterol in the finished formula; a typical 5% use level delivers approximately 0.20% cholesterol.

Product Description: Cholesterol EZ™ provides a practical aqueous dosing route for cholesterol in barrier serums, creams, lotions, and post-treatment cosmetic care products. The cyclodextrin complex improves handling and water-phase compatibility while the active molecule remains cholesterol. In the finished emulsion or serum, performance depends on the complete lipid system: cholesterol should be balanced with appropriate ceramide and free-fatty-acid inputs rather than used as a single replacement for the skin barrier lipid matrix.

Technical contextKey pointFormulation implication
Stratum-corneum lipidsCholesterol works with ceramides and free fatty acids to form ordered lamellar lipid structures.Use as part of a triple-lipid barrier system.
Barrier-recovery studiesBalanced physiologic lipid mixtures can support TEWL normalization after barrier stress; incomplete or poorly balanced lipid systems may perform less effectively.Optimize lipid ratios and verify by skin feel, stability, and TEWL or hydration testing when available.
Mature or dry skin careCholesterol-rich barrier systems are commonly used in formulas for dry, mature, or compromised-feeling skin.Useful in leave-on creams, lotions, and recovery-focused serums.
Aqueous concentrate formatCyclodextrin complexation enables water-phase dosing of cholesterol without pre-dissolving it in oils.Add during cool-down and confirm clarity/stability in the final system.

Usage: Suitable for leave-on barrier serums, moisturizing creams, lotions, body creams, post-treatment cosmetic care products, and dry or mature skin formulas where cholesterol is needed as part of a ceramide + cholesterol + free-fatty-acid system.

Mixing method:

- Add to the water phase during cool-down at ≤40°C, then mix with moderate stirring until uniform.

- For emulsions, add after primary emulsification to reduce heat exposure and to preserve clarity of the concentrate.

- Recommended finished-formula pH: 4.0–7.5. Very high electrolyte levels or strongly cationic systems may cause haze; run a small compatibility check before scale-up.

- Minimize air incorporation and prolonged open-vessel holding. Airless or low-headspace packaging is preferred for finished products with high lipid-active content.

Usage rate: 2–10% of the concentrate.

Delivered-active mapping: 2% use delivers ~0.08% cholesterol; 5% use delivers ~0.20% cholesterol; 10% use delivers ~0.40% cholesterol.

Product characteristics: Transparent, colorless liquid; low-to-moderate viscosity; faint characteristic odor.

Solubility: Water-compatible concentrate. Pure cholesterol is lipophilic, but this product is supplied as a cyclodextrin complex for aqueous-phase use. It is not intended to be used as an oil-soluble cholesterol source.

Storage: Store tightly closed at 15–25°C. Avoid prolonged heat, freezing, and evaporation from open containers.
