Galactooligosaccharide (GOS) is a prebiotic that research has shown can help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria on the skin and reduce the growth of bacteria that are harmful to the skin.

List of research projects:

1. Prebiotic effect of galacto-oligosaccharides on the skin microbiota and determination of their diffusion properties International Journal of Cosmetic Science ( IF 2.416 ) Pub Date: 2022-04-15

Research has found that applying 5% to the skin can help increase the number of beneficial S. epidermidis bacteria and reduce the harmful S. aureus bacteria.

2. Inhibitory Effect of Galactooligosaccharide on Skin Pigmentation (Please see attached document)

Research has found that GOS can help reduce the formation of melanin, thus making the skin whiter and brighter.

Research Topical benefit & mechanistic highlight Research
1. Prebiotic microbiome re-balancing – boosts Staphylococcus epidermidis while suppressing S. aureus; GOS molecules stay on the skin surface ≥ 24 h (good residency) 5 % w/w in Aristoflex® hydrogel or O/W gel-cream Petrov A et al., Int J Cosmet Sci 44 (3): 309–319, 2022
2. Barrier & hydration improvement – 8-week facial serum RCT showed ↑ water-holding capacity and ↓ TEWL; concurrent rise in beneficial microbial diversity 2 % GOS serum, twice daily, 60 healthy adults Hong K-B et al., J. Personalised Med. 10 (3): 91, 2020
3. Wound-healing acceleration via keratinocyte activation – purified GOS (and whey-GOS fraction) up-regulate NF-κB/FOXO-1 signalling, speeding scratch-closure and boosting filaggrin/occludin 0.5–2 % in vitro; points to 1–3 % hydrogel for dressings Bergandi L et al., Nutrients 14 (14): 2888, 2022
4. Anti-pigmentation – GOS suppress tyrosinase-driven melanin in B16F10 cells and lower melanin index in an 8-week human trial 1–3 % lotion (clinical); 100–400 µg mL⁻¹ in vitro Suh M-G et al., Prev Nutr Food Sci 24 (3): 321–326, 2019
5. Anti-inflammatory calming – GOS-treated keratinocytes release less IL-6/IL-8 after UVB or LPS challenge, suggesting soothing potential for sensitive-skin lines 0.5 % solution, HaCaT model Data within Bergandi L 2022 & Petrov A 2022 reports
